For my project I wanted to research the history of Lacrosse. Lacrosse originated as a sport played by Native Canadians and Americans. The main focus and thesis of my project is the French influence of the game and how the game changed drastically after contact. I tried to highlight the sense of “nationhood” felt by white Canadians surrounding this game. The shift in the game very closely mirrors political issues going on. The biggest source I used for this project was Lacrosse: A History of the Game by Donald M. Fisher. This book does a really good job at providing a very specific history starting with French missionaries and ending in the 20th century. I think the hardest thing about this topic was finding information from before the missionaries. Most recorded history of the tribal game was written by missionaries, who had a very biased view of the Native players.
