Ryan Swanson’s book explores the period between reconstruction and full on segregation by analyzing the status of America’s then just-emerging baseball clubs and how they were divided on a basis of color. Swanson looks into three different American cities, choosing a border city, a southern city and a northern city to provide context into the sections America had found itself divided into. While this book is flawed it does have some interesting arguments on a time period that is often overlooked and could be worth checking out if you find yourself curious.
