Many historians focus on how baseball was desegregated when Jackie Robinson joined the league in the 1940s. Swanson is one of the first historians to focus on the origins of racial segregation in baseball. Swanson does a good job of showing the ties between the Reconstruction era and baseball. Anyone that is interested in this time period or learning more about the origins of baseball should read Swanson’s book.
